Science Camps

Roeper's Science Camps offer multiple unique camp opportunities for students. Campers participate in focused activities for part of the day and Swimming, Outdoor Adventure and Group Choice activities for the remainder of the day.  Through these focused activities, campers will have the opportunity to gain scientific skills through hands-on experiments and activities. This will provide campers with a greater in-depth knowledge and experience in the fields of biology, chemistry or STEAM.

Science Camps

Science Camp: Biology
offered session 1: June 28 - July 9
available to students currently in grade 2 thru age 12
Explore the world of biology through hands on activities. Campers will learn about plant anatomy and needs through growing their own plants under different conditions. Campers will investigate how our bodies accesses energy in order to perform tasks. We will explore what allows our bodies to move and bend. Campers will research the biomes that exist around the world and explore the ones around us. This camp will focus on learning about biological concepts through hands on investigations.
Science Camp: Chemistry
offered session 2: July 12 - 23
available to students currently in grade 2 thru age 12
Investigate chemical and physical properties of matter through experiments and explorations. Through experimentation, campers will learn about solutions, states of matter and how solutes can affect freezing and boiling points. Campers will explore chemical reactions, defining the different types including, acid-base and combustion. Campers will learn to identify different substances using chromatography. We will finish up the session with a unit on forensic science where campers will learn to identify fingerprints and apply their new chemical knowledge to solve a crime.
Science Camp: STEAM
offered session 3: July 26 - August 6
available to students currently in grade 3 thru age 12
Campers will learn about the design process as they explore the interrelated worlds of science, technology, engineering, art and math. We will learn about simple machines and campers will combine these machines to complete a challenge. Campers will investigate circuits and how they work. Campers will learn to programs robots using Vex Robotics. Campers will be challenged to program their robots to complete tasks.

Science Camps are taught by Amy Romano, a Roeper Alum who has returned to The Roeper School as a 2nd and 3rd grade team teacher. Amy received a BSc specializing in Life Sciences from Queens University. She has experience running science activities at Roeper Summer Day Camp, teaching science to students at The Roeper School and she spent the 2017-2018 school year as a lab assistant at Havergal College in Toronto.
